Fosse Park in Leicester, one of the UK’s largest out-of town retail destinations, recently underwent a £168m extension to improve the shopping experience and attract more visitors.

As part of the scheme Biotecture designed and delivered eight living walls, enhancing the space with natural texture and colour. Some of the green walls also incorporated original brewing equipment, creating a memorable link between the site’s history and its new identity.

Our approach

To meet the client’s ambition, Biotecture designed and delivered the living walls using the hydroponic BioPanel system. A fully comprehensive cladding system with integrated irrigation.

A key technical challenge was the large internal atrium, where three walls were to be installed in an environment with significant temperature fluctuations.

We conducted trials both on site and at our nursery to identify indoor plant species that could tolerate these extremes while still thriving long term.

Sample panels were used to demonstrate the resilience of selected plants and test key interfaces.

In parallel, we collaborated closely with the design team to incorporate salvaged brewery features, beer barrels and a mash tun, into the external green walls, enhancing the site’s narrative.
