In September 2017, Smeg, a well-known kitchen appliances manufacturer, unveiled their flagship store on Regent Street.

A central feature of the sleek, minimalist interior is a two‑storey living wall designed and installed by Biotecture.

Positioned to be visible from both the ground-floor retail zone and an upper mezzanine lounge, the living wall creates a vibrant green backdrop for the store.

Our approach

Biotecture delivered the living wall using our modular BioPanel system – a fully integrated solution for longlasting growth. It includes a waterproof backing board, geotextile drainage layer, modular panels and irrigation.

Each panel contains Grodan, a water-retentive medium held in a recycled polypropylene shell.

The panels were pre-planted in our nursery and matured for 8–12 weeks before installation, ensuring a finished look from day one.

Plants were selected for their tolerance to lower, filtered light. The design includes varied foliage colours, green, silver and red, with white-flowering species for seasonal interest.

Species were also chosen for their ability to remove VOCs and particulate matter, while producing high oxygen levels to support health and well-being in the shop environment.

Its presence enhances the calm, welcoming atmosphere and contributes to improved air quality for both staff and customers.

Biotecture continues to maintain the living wall to ensure it remains at its best. This includes regular inspection and maintenance visits, as well as remote monitoring of the automated irrigation system.
