The new 120,000 sq. ft eight-storey Cardiff Interchange development brings together over 1,800 Legal & General employees into a new Wales HQ. The design prioritises sustainability and employee well-being, and meets WELL Platinum standards. The architects also targeted a four-star NABERS UK rating for net zero operational performance.

Biotecture’s contribution includes a stunning living wall behind the reception desk, seamlessly integrating nature into the build while incorporating Legal & General’s iconic umbrella logo. Biotecture was appointed by the main contractor and repeat client, ISG.

Our approach

Biotecture designed and installed an internal living wall using our patented BioPanel hydroponic system.

Planting was selected for colour, texture, and tolerance to interior conditions, with a bespoke planting design to recreate the Legal & General logo in foliage.

Panels were pre-grown at our West Sussex nursery, allowing them to mature before delivery.

The installation was completed in two stages: first, fitting the backing board, geotextile drainage layer, aluminium carrier rail, and irrigation infrastructure; then slotting in the planted panels. The installation was completed using a BMU system located above the living wall, which will also be used for ongoing maintenance.

The automated irrigation system is remotely monitored from our head office, ensuring consistent performance.

Regular on-site horticultural visits keep the wall vibrant and healthy.
