Biotecture designed and installed two sets of living walls for a sustainable office and retail development in central London.
The installations span multiple floors and provide lush green backdrops for two rooftop terraces. They are visible from both street level and communal outdoor areas.
These living walls support the building’s biodiversity and well-being goals and include a remote irrigation system with long-term maintenance to ensure year-round vitality.
Our approach
Biotecture was appointed by the main contractor to deliver the full living wall package, including panel layout, planting design, and installation.
The living walls were created using Biotecture’s hydroponic BioPanel living wall system which includes a water retentive growing medium, Grodan, and a fully automatic irrigation system.
The Architect wanted a green naturalistic look for this project.
We choose hardy and robust evergreen plants for the base matrix including Hedera helix, Asplenium scoloopendrium, and Euonymous ‘Emerland Gaiety’. Spot plants including Heuchera and Erigeron were added to create seasonal interest.
The living walls were planted up in our West Sussex nursery and allowed to mature for 12 weeks before being installed onsite. This ensured full green coverage from day one.
The results
The living walls have created a new green landmark for Moorgate, forming lush backdrops to roof terraces that provide valuable outdoor space and support employee well-being. Beyond their visual impact, the walls contribute to local biodiversity by offering habitats for pollinators and other urban wildlife.
The BioPanel system enabled full green coverage from day one. Its resilient design, combined with automated irrigation and ongoing maintenance, will ensure the living walls continue to thrive for years to come.
