London’s Regent’s Place campus has recently been transformed. As part of the redevelopment of a 3,500 m2 office building, Biotecture were appointed to design and install a full living cladding façade.

Biodiversity Net Gain targets were a key consideration alongside visual appeal.

This three-storey, 36m x 9.7m living wall was created using Biotecture’s BioPanel living cladding system.

BioPanel includes a thin water retentive growing medium that retains moisture for up to 3 weeks making it ideal for living walls.

Our approach

The planting was designed in collaboration with Townshend Landscape Architects. It includes ferns, shrubs, and trailing plants to create the desired lush jungle aesthetic, which will continue to develop over time.

As biodiversity was a priority, many native evergreen plants were selected including fern and ivy varieties.

The design team also included 70 aluminium planters to allow for larger plants and 50 integrated habitat boxes to support the whole insect lifecycle.

The plants were planted up into BioPanels and allowed to fully mature before the wall was installed on-site. This achieves a high impact living wall from day one.

The wall includes an integrated irrigation system with is monitored 5 days a week and Biotecture’s maintenance team carry out regular maintenance visits.

The results

The living wall delivers a striking, verdant aesthetic while enhancing biodiversity.

Robust evergreen planting ensures year-round greenery and seasonal flowering plants will provide food for pollinators.

The living wall will reduce air pollution by capturing particulate matter and absorbing carbon dioxide.

Users of the nearby seating will also enjoy the sense of calm and relaxation that comes with spending time in nature.
