Project Details

  • Glasgow Living wall spanning three elevations
  • Set up to handle 200,000 tonnes of council green bin residual waste per year
  • The Glasgow Recycling and renewable energy centre will produce enough energy to power 222,000 households

Glasgow City Council handles in excess of 22,000 tonnes of household waste every year. In 2016 72% of this was sent to landfill. With landfill tax on the rise and ambitious Scottish government waste targets, in 2012 Glasgow council began to plan for a new state of the art recycling and sustainable waste management facility which would radically overhaul the city’s waste management strategy.

As part of the extensive works carried out on the Polmadie site, Biotecture were commissioned to produce a large external living wall that would wrap three elevations of the building.

A distinct planting plant of intersecting flowing curves in a colour palette of fresh greens and silver and white accents was chosen by the client to add movement and soften the hard corners of this side of the building.
